Calls Kept Coming Till 4 am’: Thackeray Shiv Sena Alleges BJP ‘Rained Money’ Before Civic Polls

Maharashtra civic polls faced pre-vote tension in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar due to alleged cash distribution. Shiv Sena’s Ambadas Danve accused BJP of distributing money and pressuring the administration, criticising the Election Commission’s absence. Just hours before voting began for civic bodies across Maharashtra, allegations of cash distribution sparked tension in parts of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, even as polling commenced for 29 municipal corporations on Wednesday. Voting is being held on January 15 across the state, including in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where 11,18,263 voters are eligible to cast their ballots, according to the revised electoral rolls. However, the run-up to polling was marked by reports of alleged money distribution, triggering unrest in certain areas and drawing sharp political reactions. ‘Calls Kept Coming Till 4 am’: Danve Targets BJP Shiv Sena (Thackeray faction) leader and former Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Ambadas Danve, levelled serious allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party after casting his vote in the city. Speaking to reporters, Danve said he voted early and described his vote as one of “loyalty and struggle”. He claimed he received repeated phone calls until 4 am, alleging that the BJP had “rained money” across Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar ahead of polling. Accusing the party of arrogance driven by moneyand  power, Danve questioned why a party that frequently speaks about development would need to rely on cash distribution. Votes, he said, should be sought on the basis of work, adding that the electorate is wise and will respond appropriately. ‘Administration Under Pressure, EC Missing’: Fresh Charge Danve also accused the ruling side of placing the administration under pressure, alleging that the Election Commission was nowhere to be seen during the process. He claimed selective justice was being delivered under administrative influence and urged voters to take note of these issues and stand with what he called the right candidates.

Daulatabad Fort

Daulatabad Fort (also known as Devgiri) is a massive 11th-century citadel that stands on a high conical hill. Its three encircling walls with bastions, a moat, and a complex defense system made it one of the most powerful forts during the medieval period. It was a Yadava stronghold until Ala-ud-din Khilji invaded and captured it in 1296. Muhammad-bin-Tughluq shifted the Delhi Sultanate capital to Daulatabad in 1327 and it served as the capital of India until 1334. Most of the fort walls still stand although some of the palaces and other structures lie in ruins. What stands tall is the Chand Minar, a 30-metre-high minaret built by Sultan Ahmed Shah II in 1447. The fort is located 16 km northwest of Aurangabad, about halfway to Ellora Caves.

Bibi ka Maqbara

No guide to Aurangabad is complete without mentioning Bibi ka Maqbara. Known as the Taj of the Deccan, it is one of the city’s iconic monuments. Like his father Shah Jahan who built the Taj Mahal in memory of his wife, Aurangzeb too commissioned a mausoleum for his wife Rabia-ul-Daurani. However, it was his son Muhammad Azam Shah who eventually built the Bibi ka Maqbara in memory of his mother. Unlike the Taj Mahal, which is built of marble, Bibi ka Maqbara is made of limestone and plaster and is encased in marble, but the onion dome is all marble. In my opinion, the comparisons to the Taj Mahal do injustice to this monument, which has its own humble charm.

Guide to Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar)

A couple of important temples stand within a short driving distance from Aurangabad. One of them is the Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple. This is the twelfth Jyotirlinga and is an important pilgrimage site. The original temple was destroyed by the Mughals. It was rebuilt in the current form in the 18th century under the sponsorship of queen Ahilyabai Holkar. The other temple worth seeing is Bhadra Maruti Temple (pictured on the left) in Khuldabad. Here, the idol of Hanuman is portrayed in a reclining or sleeping posture. This is also a major pilgrimage centre and is particularly busy during Hanuman Jayanti and Ram Navami. Both temples are close to Ellora Caves (1-5km), so you can easily combine these sites.

Trump Walks Back Tariff Threat On European Countries Over Greenland

“Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st,” Trump wrote on Truth Social after a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos. He did not give details of the deal. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he was canceling his planned tariff on US allies in Europe over US control of Greenland after he and the leader of NATO agreed to a ‘framework of a future deal’ on Arctic security. The abrupt about-face emerged hours after Trump had insisted that he wants to “get Greenland, including right, title and ownership,” but said he would not use force to do so while deriding European allies and vowing that NATO should not try to block US expansionism. In an extraordinary speech at the World Economic Forum, the president said he was asking for territory that was “cold and poorly located.” He said the US had effectively saved Europe during World War II and even declared of NATO: “It’s a very small ask compared to what we have given them for many, many decades.” “We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be frankly unstoppable. But I won’t do that, OK?” Trump said, later adding, “I don’t have to” and “I don’t want to use force.” Trump often tries to increase pressure on the other side when he believes it can lead to a favorable deal, and he seemed happy to do so ahead of the forum in Davos. The implications of his remarks were enormous, potentially rupturing an alliance that has held firm since the dawn of the Cold War and seemed among the globe’s most unshakable pacts. NATO was founded by leading European nations, the US and Canada to form a bloc to counter the Soviet Union. Its other members have been steadfast in saying Greenland is not for sale and cannot be wrested from Denmark, meaning Trump’s comments could yet mark the beginning of a larger geopolitical standoff. The president has long said the US will get control of Greenland no matter what it takes, arguing that Washington needs the world’s largest island to counter threats in the surrounding Arctic Ocean from Russia and China. That’s despite America already having a large military base there. A Danish government official told The Associated Press after Trump’s speech that Copenhagen is ready to discuss US security concerns. But the official, who was not authorised to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, underscored the government’s position that “red lines”— namely Denmark’s sovereignty — must be respected. Greenland’s government responded by telling its citizens to be prepared. It has published a handbook in English and Greenlandic on what to do in a crisis that urges residents to ensure they have sufficient food, water, fuel and supplies at home to survive for five days. “We just went to the grocery store and bought the supplies,” said Tony Jakobsen in Greenland’s capital Nuuk said, showing off the contents of bags that included candles, snacks and toilet paper. Jakobsen said he thought Trump’s rhetoric towards Greenland was “just threats… but it’s better to be ready than not ready.” Trump, meanwhile, urged Denmark and the rest of NATO to stand aside, adding an ominous warning. “We want a piece of ice for world protection, and they won’t give it,” Trump said. “You can say yes, and we will be very appreciative. Or you can say no, and we will remember.”

Aurangabad Railway Station Renamed As Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Station

The move came nearly three years after the then government headed by Eknath Shinde formally renamed Aurangabad city as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Mumbai: Three years after the renaming of the Aurangabad city in Maharashtra, the Central Railway on Saturday said the Aurangabad railway station has been officially renamed as “Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar railway station.” Its new station code will be ‘CPSN’, the Central Railway said in a release. The station falls under the Nanded Division of South Central Railway. The BJP-led Mahayuti government on October 15 had issued a gazette notification to change the name of the Aurangabad railway station. The move came nearly three years after the then government headed by Eknath Shinde formally renamed Aurangabad city as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The city, previously named for Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, received the new name as a tribute to Chhatrapati Sambhaji, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and second ruler of the Maratha state. Aurangabad railway station was opened in 1900, during the reign of the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is a tourist hub, surrounded by many historical monuments, including the Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
